An Pháil (the Pale) or An Pháil Shasanach (the English Pale) was an area around Dublin originally established during the first half of the 13th century. The area was marked by a boundary of wooden stakes or pales (from the Latin, palus ) and ditches, beyond which the authority of the English did not apply. The expression ‘beyond the pale’ has been widely used from the 17th century onwards to signify being outside the influence of English colonial rule. Today In Ireland, County Dublin is still critically and resentfully referred to as the Pale for attracting most government attention and resources.
